I studied Japanese history and folk study in Kanagawa University, and I have got a doctoral degree there. After that, I have belonged to that institute as a researcher. I was interested in history since childhood and read biographies of historical heroes and watched historical drama on TV. However, my interests were not only in Japanese history, but also in Chinese, Indian, European history as well as folk studies. So, even after entering university, I was not yet sure what I wanted to specialize in, but finally chose Japanese history. I never regretted that choice, for not only did I find intellectual stimulation, I also found mentors and friends for life, and of course my choice now brought me to Ghent University as well. Now, I will do research on the topic of “Nurturing Life and the health cultivation” (yōjō 養生) and with Prof. Niehaus and Dr. Koch. The end of the 18th and 19th centuries when yōjō was propagated was an era of major changes in Japanese society. For example, the population rapidly increased during this period. Therefore, I do not think the demographic, social, political and intellectual developments are irrelevant to the dissemination of the yōjō thought and practice, and my research will focus on the reciprocity of yōjō discourses and it’s historical context.
